Pole-to-Pole Cruising: The Ultimate Expedition Voyage

What if you could chase the sun from the top of the world to the bottom—spotting polar bears in the Arctic and penguins in Antarctica, all on one seamless journey? Expedition cruising has entered a bold new era, and the latest trend is nothing short of extraordinary: pole-to-pole itineraries that span the globe from north to south, offering immersive access to Earth’s most remote and awe-inspiring regions.

These multi-month voyages are designed for travelers who crave adventure without sacrificing luxury. With Viking’s 2025 itinerary sold out and 2026 already waitlisted, early booking is essential. Demand is surging for experiences that go beyond traditional cruising—ones that offer cultural depth, ecological diversity, and the thrill of crossing hemispheres in style.

Two standout cruise lines—Seabourn and Viking—are leading the charge with Arctic-to-Antarctic expeditions launching in 2027 and 2028. Each brings its own distinct approach to luxury at the edge of the world.

Seabourn’s 94-day Grand Expedition: Pole to Pole sets sail in August 2027 aboard the Seabourn Venture, a 264-passenger all-suite ship built for ultra-luxury exploration. This vessel is a floating sanctuary outfitted with two custom submarines, 24 zodiacs, eight sea kayaks, and a team of 23 expedition experts. Guests enjoy spacious suites with verandas, double-sink baths, walk-in closets, and fully stocked bars. Onboard amenities include an infinity pool, spa, fitness center, and eight dining venues—plus complimentary wines, spirits, caviar service, shore excursions, and even a submarine dive. The itinerary begins in Greenland and winds through the Arctic wilderness before heading south to the Caribbean, Brazil, Uruguay, and the subantarctic islands, ending in Antarctica and Ushuaia, Argentina. A shorter 82-day version is also available.

Viking’s 81-day Arctic to Antarctic Explorer departs September 2027 aboard the Viking Octantis, a 378-passenger vessel that blends expedition capability with refined Scandinavian elegance. This is where expedition meets luxury: guests enjoy Nordic Balcony cabins with heated floors and drying closets, a curated library, and dining at Mamsen’s and Manfredi’s. The ship’s in-hull marina allows for smooth deployment of special operation boats, even in rough conditions. The journey begins in Nuuk, Greenland, and travels through the Canadian High Arctic, Great Lakes, and East Coast cities before transiting the Panama Canal and cruising Chilean fjords en route to Antarctica. Viking includes business class airfare, shipboard credit, guided excursions, and expedition gear. The same itinerary returns in 2028.

These voyages typically span 81 to 94 days, with pricing from $72,995 to $94,499. While the investment is significant, the value is clear: travelers gain access to remote regions, expert-led excursions, and a seamless luxury experience that few will ever replicate.

Pole-to-pole cruising isn’t just a bucket-list trip—it’s a new benchmark in expedition travel. For those ready to see the world’s extremes in one extraordinary voyage, the time to plan is now.
