If you’ve ever wondered what it’s actually like to attend the christening of a brand-new river ship, this episode gives you a front-row seat.

In this episode of Luxury Cruising, host Dr. Krystal Sodaitis welcomes Michelle McSorley, who had the rare opportunity to attend the christening of AmaWaterways’ newest river ship, the AmaSophia, in Amsterdam. Michelle was there as part of ASTA’s fifth annual River Cruise Expo, an industry event that brought together multiple cruise lines, ship tours, educational sessions, and one very memorable finale.

What unfolds is more than a conversation about one ship.

It becomes a broader look at where river cruising is headed, what new brands are doing differently, and why this corner of the cruise world is becoming more appealing to travelers who want luxury without the scale or chaos of a mega-ship experience.

Why This Launch Was More Than a Ceremony

When most people hear the word christening, they picture a quick ship-naming ceremony, a champagne bottle, maybe a few photos, and that’s it.

But according to Michelle, the christening of AmaSophia felt much bigger than that.

The event capped off ASTA’s River Cruise Expo in Amsterdam and included entertainment, live performances, speeches from AmaWaterways executives, and a celebratory atmosphere that felt more like a major launch event than a formal tradition. Michelle described it as a huge party, full of energy and excitement from both attendees and the AmaWaterways team.

One especially memorable moment came during a speech by CEO Catherine Powell, when a rainbow appeared overhead — one of those strangely perfect travel moments that sounds scripted but wasn’t. Michelle also shared a quote from Sarah Little, who served as AmaSophia’s godmother, about rivers moving forward with curiosity and discovery. That message gave the event a deeper meaning beyond the spectacle.

And if that wasn’t enough, the night ended with a drone show viewed from the top deck of the ship.

Not bad for a christening.

What Michelle Saw Onboard AmaSophia

Michelle did get the chance to tour the AmaSophia, and the ship seems to deliver what many travelers already associate with AmaWaterways: polished design, warm service, and smart use of space.

One feature she highlighted was AmaWaterways’ signature double balcony setup in some suite categories. For travelers unfamiliar with that layout, it combines a French balcony near the bed with a separate sitting area that leads to a traditional walk-out balcony. Michelle noted that it made the suite feel especially spacious and luxurious — a nice counterpoint to the stereotype that river cruise cabins are always small and limiting.

She also mentioned that AmaWaterways is in the middle of a brand refresh, with updated linens, new bath amenities, warmer paint tones, and a bold new “vivace red” color being introduced. While these changes are not exclusive to AmaSophia, this new ship gave the brand a natural moment to showcase them.

In other words, AmaSophia may be new, but it also represents something larger: a refreshed expression of a brand that already has strong recognition in river cruising.

The Surprise Cruise Line That Stole the Show

Interestingly, AmaSophia wasn’t the only thing Michelle was excited about.

During the expo, she stayed on a ship from Viva Cruises, a German-based river cruise line that may be far less familiar to North American travelers. And based on her description, Viva ended up being one of the biggest surprises of the trip.

Michelle stayed on the Viva Enjoy, which she described as bright, airy, and modern, with a two-story atrium, blue-toned decor, a suite setup with French balcony, butler service, champagne on arrival, and multiple dining venues. She also pointed out that the line includes Wi-Fi, beverages, gratuities, and one excursion per stop at a starting price around $2,800 per person for seven nights, which she considered a strong value for the experience offered.

That matters.

Because one of the most useful things in this episode is not just hearing about one beautiful new ship, but seeing how quickly the river cruise market is expanding. New players are entering the space, established brands are refreshing their offerings, and travelers now have more variety in style, pricing, and atmosphere than many people realize.

Michelle also explained that Viva is intentionally growing at a measured pace, with plans to reach about 15 ships over the next decade, while still focusing on service. That slower, strategic growth stands in contrast to bigger players trying to scale more aggressively.

What the River Cruise Expo Revealed About the Future

One of the strongest takeaways from the episode is that river cruising is not standing still.

Michelle described the expo as a rare chance not just to hear about brands in theory, but to experience them firsthand — dining onboard, meeting crew, touring ships, and getting a real sense of how each line feels. That distinction matters, especially in a travel category where small differences in service, design, and atmosphere can completely shape the overall experience.

She also mentioned several notable brands present at the expo, including Uniworld, Scenic, Viking, Riverside, and AmaWaterways, along with discussion around Celebrity River Cruises, which is preparing to enter the river market next year. Michelle made it clear that Celebrity is one of the launches she is personally most excited about.

That says a lot about where the market is going.

Travelers who may have once dismissed river cruising as stuffy, limited, or old-fashioned may need to rethink that assumption. Michelle’s perspective was refreshingly simple: keep an open mind, because there are now so many different options that it is increasingly possible to match travelers with the right ship, the right vibe, and the right experience.

And for travelers who dislike rough seas, feel overwhelmed by giant ocean ships, or simply want something more intimate and destination-focused, this episode reinforces why river cruising continues to win people over. Krystal even pointed out that river cruising can be especially appealing for people who are nervous about open water or prone to motion sickness, since the sailing is usually smooth and land is almost always in view.

Final Verdict: Why This Matters for Luxury Travelers

This episode works on two levels.

On the surface, it offers a behind-the-scenes look at the christening of a brand-new river ship — and that alone is fun to hear about.

But underneath that, it also reveals something more useful for travelers: river cruising is evolving fast, and the range of options is broader than many luxury travelers realize. Between established names like AmaWaterways, rising players like Viva, and incoming newcomers like Celebrity, the category is becoming more competitive, more diverse, and more interesting.

The christening of AmaSophia may have been the centerpiece of Michelle’s trip, but it also served as a symbol of what’s happening across the industry.

There’s momentum here.

And if you’ve been river-cruise curious but assumed the experience was too small, too quiet, too traditional, or too limited, this episode is a good reminder that the landscape is changing.

Bottom line:
AmaSophia gave Michelle a memorable front-row seat to one of river cruising’s biggest celebratory moments — but the bigger story is that luxury river cruising is entering a new chapter, and travelers now have more choices than ever.
